Online sales are booming of course. This year Amazon once again dominated Black Friday sales on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday according to Slice Intelligence, with 38.8% and 36.1% market share each day. Their nearest competitors Best Buy (5.8%, 5.5%) and Walmart (3.3%, 3.8%) show just how far ahead Amazon are in dominating the online market. But what are people buying and how about adult onesies for Christmas?
This year’s list of most popular gifts for children is dominated by the big and small screen, including Frozen, Thunderbirds, and a Tumbling Stuart toy inspired by blockbuster movie Minions. Amazon is predicting that My Friend Freddy is one present that will be in demand. In fact Amazon now have a “most gifted” feature where you can see the current most popular gifts. For young technology buffs, VTech has its latest KidiZoom camera – the Duo, offering the Wacky Photo shaker. Plus there’s an alien style Fisher-Price Dance and Move BeatBo. Gizmag had a go at predicting what would be the top tech gifts this year. These include the model racing cars of Anki Overdrive, a sort of Scalextric for the 21st century, Lego Dimensions which can bring your toys to life, as well as some pretty cool robots and drones.
And in a post from Google we get an insight into what people are wishing for by looking at top searches. It’s a bit like déjà vu all over again. Drones are flying high. These are no longer expensive playthings for the tech-savvy. Search for “toy drone” and you’ll find countless cheap, easy-to-use devices available from many different retailers, mostly made in China of course. Nationwide shopping searches for drones are up 80% over the past year. Hoverboards are trending too. Searches for “hoverboards” started trending in the summer and are up more than 500% since July. Are we all headed back to the future? And would you believe it Google are saying that holiday onesies are the new “ugly Christmas sweaters”. Last year “ugly Christmas sweaters” were all the rage. This year they are seeing holiday onesies as the new kitsch partywear of choice, as searches for “adult onesies” are trending even faster than searches for “ugly Christmas sweater.” So it looks like you will all be getting adult onesies for Christmas. And Retro seems to be back generally with Bomber jackets, Levi jeans, Adidas Superstars all appearing strongly in search. Searches for these 90s fashion trends more than doubled over the past year. So looks like our Retro style will be one of the favorite adult onesies for Christmas. Who says nostalgia is not what it used to be. And we noticed that Channing Tatum is one celebrity who loves adult onesies for Christmas. “We do onesies every year,” he told Entertainment Today this week. “The baby, Jen and I, we’re all in the same onesies, and I realized I love onesies, like we all should. Why did we stop wearing them at whatever age we were babies? Onesies are dope!”
