Spring time is adult onesie time

Spring time is adult onesie time

This week we had the Spring, or Vernal (from the Latin for Spring), Equinox on March 20th. Equinox because it is equal hours of night and day. The sun appears to be making its way back in to the Northern Hemisphere bringing warmth and extra daylight hours. Of course, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are reversed, so our friends in Australia will begin to start thinking about Fall as the sun heads northwards. The March equinox can come on March 19, 20 or 21. And 2016 has the earliest March equinox since the year 1896. Why? Well it’s something clever to do with leap years, best read for yourself here. The March equinox has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth for communities in the Northern Hemisphere. For simple folk living off the land without canning or refrigeration, Winter was a time of limited food options so the return of the sun meant new growth for crops and new birth for lambs etc. Not surprising then that many cultures celebrate spring festivals and holidays around the March equinox, like Easter and the end of Lent fasting, Passover, or visiting the pyramid of the Sun in Mexico. In Japan, as Spring approaches, the arrival of cherry blossom (Sakura) is celebrated by dressing up for great family picnics. The colorful Hindu festival of Holi has become popular across the world as it involves participants throwing color over each other, either with dry powder and water or colored water-filled balloons. This festival signifies the victory of light over dark. The Equinox is the official start of Spring and that can also be adult onesie time. Although they are often associated with cold winter weather, our cotton adult onesies are practical in Spring or Summer too. Are we being too optimistic to think that Winter is Going (not Coming)? There is an old country saying: “Don’t say that Spring has come until you can put your foot on nine daisies.” Please send in nine daisies so that we can tread on them. Don’t believe it’s still adult onesie time?  USA today  reminds us that the music festival season is just around the corner. We can all get out and about in cool summer gear. More of that soon no doubt.
