How Much Sleep Should You Get?

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the amount of rest you should be getting each day changes according to your age.  Instead of the requisite eight hours that has been traditionally prescribed, adults aged 18-25 and 26-64 should get seven to nine hours of sleep a night.  This requisite decreases with age and adults older than 64 should get 7-8 hours per night.  Newborns sleep an average of a whopping 14-17 hours per day while infants can make it on 12-15 hours of sleep per day, so don’t deprive your children of those naps any time soon!

Of course, these new guidelines are meant for individuals who have no sleeping disorders and are generally considered to be in good health.  Doctor’s suggest that sleeping outside the recommended range might be okay but deviating widely from the suggested number of hours, may be harmful and a symptom of a serious illness, especially for those who constantly sleep outside of the normal range.

These new recommendations suggest that Americans have consistently got less sleep than is needed for a healthy lifestyle.  We tend to underestimate how important proper sleep habits are to our general well being.  An adequate amount of sleep is important for mental and physical health as well as creativity and metabolism.  In fact, these new recommendations are so important that the National Sleep Foundation has suggested that schools change the start times of middle and high school to 8:30am or later.  As an adult, if you’re getting the correct amount of sleep but feel tired during the day, fall asleep during regular activities, or wake up not feeling rested – you may have a common sleep disorder and should talk to your Doctor.
