Comic Con in San Diego for Cosplay Fans

This week saw Comic Con in San Diego, a comic book convention. Originally a small event started in 1970 by a few fans of comic books this has now grown into a major cultural event with well over 100,000 attendees. In fact last year it claimed attendance was 167,000. It now features hands-on workshops and educational programming such as the Comics Arts Conference; there are anime and film screenings (including a separate film festival); the latest computer and smartphone games; the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, considered to be the “Oscars” of the comics industry; a Masquerade costume competition and opportunities to meet SciFi and Fantasy actors and writers. It’s a big industry now and Christian Science Monitor asks, “How did we get to the point where all things nerdy dominate pop culture to such an extent?” Probably the availability of CGI and computer graphics has something to do with it. Books like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones can be brought to life in a way now that was not possible in 1970. The new BFG film is a great example of how fantasy creatures can seem so real on the big screen. Hollywood hero Ben Affleck took the stage for the first time last Saturday as both superhero actor and director. He was appearing on a Warner Bros. discussion panel on films. This year, Warner Bros. released the first poster for the upcoming Wonder Woman film and also displayed costumes from their movie “Suicide Squad,” which will be released in August. Affleck needed to capture the moment with a picture of nearly 6,500 fans cheering for him. “This is kind of nerdy, but this is a big deal in my life,” said the star of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

As well as the business of show, Comic Con gives ordinary fans the chance to dress up as their favorite characters without being thought too weird. Cosplay fans go to great lengths to have the best costumes from some of the most popular and iconic gaming, movie, and comic book franchises. As well as regular characters from Star Wars which appear each year at Comic Con, Game of Thrones was a particular favorite, not surprising perhaps as the TV Series should reach its finale next year. And of course with all the super hero movies around there were plenty of Spiderman and Captain America look a-likes.
