Last year was the year when pajama and adult onesie fashion went mainstream. We got used to seeing pictures of our favorite “celebs” on social media wearing what looked like pjs, out to parties and events. This Vogue article is typical, “Wear your pajamas out in the day”, offering this quote from the creative director of a sleepwear label, “It’s certainly unexpected to wear sleepwear out of the house…. but you want people to say wow, didn’t expect that to work!” But as they correctly point out, it is essential to keep in mind which pajamas you choose to wear in the daytime, noting quality is key. Last week was fashion week in London UK and the Metro commented that fashion brand Mulberry sent models down the runway wearing magical ponchos that looked, essentially, like giant printed duvets. And it’s not just for ladies as Ask Men brought us Pajamas Are On The Runways; you have to wonder how the models feel about wearing this stuff. You may have also noticed the current trend for “Hygge” which we think is related to the popularity (and hilarity) of pajama and adult onesie fashion. “Visit Denmark” tell us hygge means creating a nice, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people around you, (its loosely related to our word hug). But some people seem to use it as an excuse to sit around in your pajamas all day or wear your onesie out to your local store. Newyorker magazine recently explained The Year of Hygge, The Danish Obsession With Getting Cozy. Hygge can be a verb as in “come over to my place and we’ll hygge”. It’s possible to hygge alone, wrapped in a flannel blanket or an adult onesie, but the true expression of hygge is joining with loved ones in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere – pajama party scandi style. But what made us think that pajama and adult onesie fashion has gone too far were pictures from Bollywood (the center of the Indian film industry) which showed Indian actor Ranveer Singh turning up to a party in what looked like a large white see through adult onesie. We have been asked before to make a white cotton onesie but the problem is they tend to be too transparent as our picture shows. But maybe we should think again if this adult onesie fashion continues – anyone for plain white cotton “condom funzee”?
